Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi hailed on Wednesday the role that has been played by the American University in Cairo (AUC) throughout its history in serving the Egyptian education sector and society.

President El-Sisi also highlighted the AUC's contribution to the country's educational and research system and role in fostering closer relations between the Egyptian and American peoples, said presidential spokesman Bassam Radi.

President El-Sisi made the remarks on Tuesday at a meeting with the AUC's Board of Trustees, under its Chairman Richard Bartlett, and the university's President Francis Ricciardone in the presence of Higher Education Minister Khaled Abdel-Ghafar.

President El-Sisi greeted the AUC's Board of Trustees on the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the university, highlighting the importance of strategic relations between Egypt and the US.

The president asserted Egypt's keenness on boosting Egyptian-US ties, which he described as crucial for maintaining stability in the Middle East region.

El-Sisi reiterated that fighting terrorism requires spreading knowledge and raising awareness in addition to creating an open-minded and fine-balanced human being, citing the major role of education and universities in this regard.

The chairman of the AUC's Board of Trustees asserted that the university is committed to serving Egypt in the long run and promoting ties between the Egyptian and American peoples by offering well-developed education.
