On Tuesday, the second day of the new Egyptian parliamentary session, some members of parliament demanded that members of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) face trial for killing civilians.
Abul Ezz El-Hariri, member of the Revolution Continues coalition and newly-elected MP said that: “being the revolution parliament, our power exceeds that of both the dissolved constitution and the SCAF. The head of the SCAF should be in prison now.” This came in response to Essam El-Errian, a Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) MP, who asked parliamentarians to take into consideration the constitution and the law in investigating the martyrs’ file.
Moreover, Mohamed Abu Hamed, an MP from the Egyptian Bloc Coalition has demanded the trial of those who murdered the martyrs of the January 25 revolution, and claimed that members of the SCAF bear full responsibility for killing protesters during clashes at the Maspero building, Mohamed Mahmoud Street and the Cabinet building. At least 50 Egyptians lost their lives during those events.
Egypt’s newly-elected parliament elected Saad El-Katatni, former secretary-general of the FJP to be the speaker of the parliament. The opening session of the People’s Assembly took place on Monday.
