The head of Egypt's National Elections Authority, Judge Lasheen Ibrahim, announced on Wednesday that the national referendum on a number of constitutional amendments would take place from Saturday to Monday in Egypt, and from Friday to Sunday for Egyptians abroad.

"The referendum on constitutional amendments will be completely supervised by the judiciary,” said Ibrahim, speaking at a press conference in Cairo.

"There will be a judge at every ballot box," he said.

He also said that the media and civil society would follow the process.

Egypt's parliament  on Tuesday passed the proposed amendments to Egypt's 2014 constitution, including an amendment that could extend President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi’s time in office until 2030.

The amended articles would increase the presidential term from four to six years, allocate 25 percent of parliamentary seats to female candidates, re-introduce an upper chamber of parliament (the Senate), and reinstating the post of vice president.

A total of 531 MPs voted in favour of the new amendments, 22 voted against, and one abstained.  

At least 55 million out of the country's population of 110 million are eligible to vote in the referendum.
