Polls to remain open during rest hour, says NEC on Egypt's referendum

Egypt’s National Elections Commission has said that the polls will remain open to voters on Sunday during the mandated rest hour, which is set by the law at 3 to 4pm.

Lashin Ibrahim, chairman of the commission, said that the decision to keep the polls open is due to the high voter turnout.

Ibrahim said that the Central Operations Room is continuing to monitor the voting process to quickly deal with any issues that might arise.

The referendum on the amendments to a number of articles of the constitution is taking place for three consecutive days amid follow-up from various civil society organisations and local and international media.

Qalioubiya Governor Alaa Marzouk said that Saturday – the first day of the referendum – saw a significant turnout, adding that the voting process is taking place in an orderly fashion across his governorate, which lies north of Cairo in the Nile Delta region, MENA reported.
