Egypt has completed more than half of its construction for its government districted located in the New Administrative Capital. Construction has of the new capital has been taking place East of Cairo and aims to have things up and running by next year, said an official.

"So far we have completed more than 55 percent of the government district," Khaled Al-Hussein said, a spokesman for the mega project told through TV comments to the privately owned satellite TV channel Sada ElBalad on Wednesday.

He said that the implementation of the $45 billion project, launched by Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi in 2015, is "developing in accordance with pre-set plans and timetables."

Earlier this year, the country's planning ministry said around 50,000 state employees are planned to be relocated to new offices in the mega city in 2020.

The project, located some 45km east of Cairo, is one of a number of national development projects currently under fruition by the Egyptian government with a view of improving infrastructure and creating job opportunities.

The government district is intended to house 29 ministries, and other state institutions, including the cabinet and parliament buildings.

The new capital will also offer homes for at least 6.5 million people and has an international airport, whose trial operation started on Tuesday.
