Muslim Brotherhood launches strike counter-campaign

Instead of participating in a general strike, members of the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party joined local council workers in cleaning Cairo's streets Saturday

The Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) has launched a campaign dubbed "A day for cleaning Egypt" to counter calls for a nationwide strike.

The FJP's North Cairo Secretariat, which declared its complete rejection of the nationwide strike plan, stated Saturday that Egyptians need to work even harder than before to build Egypt.

Members of the FJP North Cairo Secretariat decided to work with local council employees Saturday, despite it being a weekend, to clean the streets of Rod El-Farag, Shubra and Sahel districts.

The FJP is now Egypt's majority party in parliament, gaining around 45 per cent of its seats. The party rejects calls for a national strike to bring down the ruling military council.

The strike initiative was spearheaded by the Egypt Revolutionaries' Alliance, which brings together over 50 political groups, including the country’s six most prominent revolutionary movements, alongside university and school students and independent workers’ unions.
