Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi discussed regional developments with Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte on Monday.

The talks focused on challenges facing a number of Middle Eastern countries, the Egyptian presidency said.

In his meeting with Conte on the sidelines of the United National General Assembly in New York, El-Sisi asserted the importance of uniting efforts to reach political settlements to the crises in some countries such as Syria and Libya.  

Conte said his country was keen to continue to offer consultation and coordination with Egypt regarding developments in the Middle East.

According to the presidential statement, El-Sisi and Conte discussed bilateral relations and means to boost cooperation, especially in the fields of the economy and trade.

The Egyptian president and the Italian premier talked about the joint cooperation in the investigation into the murder of Italian student Giulio Regeni in Cairo in 2016.

The leaders discussed a host of other issues, including illegal immigration and efforts to combat terrorism.
