A new waste monitoring application that allows users to request rubbish collections when they see unsightly garbage on the streets will be rolled out to the Cairo districts of Shoubra, Abdeen, Rod El-Farag and Heliopolis in the near future.

Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad announced on Monday the launch of the new waste monitoring and management system in partnership with Environ Adapt.

Under the new partnership, Environ Adapt runs two new applications, one for governmental agencies, which was not named by the ministry, and another for citizens and civil society, called Dawar.

Dawar asks users who see rubbish on the street to take a picture of it using the application. The application uses GPS to capture the geolocation and timestamp of the photo taken by user, and when a photo is sent, a ticket is opened and monitored by the Ministry of Environment and the municipality.

An authorised collection company then goes to the location of the photo to collect the waste. Finally, a picture of the same place with the rubbish removed is sent to the user.

A beta version of the app has been active in Maadi and Tora since 2018, Environ Adapt told Ahram Online on Monday.

Fouad said that the system will be activated in the six Cairo districts listed above first, then later on in the rest of Cairo and in six other governorates.

She did not give details about the exact launch date.

Dawar was developed by Environ Adapt in cooperation with the ministry and with the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ).

It is available free on Google Play and the App Store.

The application also provides sustainability news in Arabic, and the company says that it tries to connect citizens with local green companies, NGOs and government authorities via the application.

In June, Environ Adapt signed a protocol with the Ministry of Environment making Dawar the official waste monitoring and management system for the governorates of Cairo, Giza, Alexandria, Qena, Assiut, Gharbiya and Kafr El-Sheikh.

Environ Adapt, established in 2015, is an Egyptian waste management and resource recovery company, specializing in waste project development for alternative fuels.
