President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi stated on Saturday that Egypt aims to develop the transport system and raise its efficiency and specifications to meet international standards.

El-Sisi's remarks came during his meeting with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Transport Minister Kamel El-Wazir and Chairman of US Progress Rail Locomotives (PRL) company William Peterson.

According to a statement by Presidential Spokesperson Bassam Rady, the meeting was to follow-up on the progress in the agreement between the Ministry of Transport and the US company to import of new railway tractors, and upgrade the ministry's existing ones.

This comes, Rady said, as part of Egypt's efforts to develop its railway system and services provided to citizens.

An agreement was signed in September 2018 between the ministry and PRL to modernise and repair 91 tractors, buy 50 new tractors and maintain 141 tractors for 15 years.

El-Sisi spoke of the importance of railway projects, due to their direct impact on millions of citizens. He stressed that priority should be given to the application of the highest security standards in these projects.
