Egypt's Sharm El-Sheikh is set to receive on Thursday the first direct flight from the UK since 2015, two months after the British government lifted a ban on flights to the Red Sea resort town.

A charter flight carrying 110 passengers is set to land at Sharm El-Sheikh airport at around 3pm, sources at the airport and Egypt's travel agents association said, according to state TV's website.

A number of Egyptian officials, including the South Sinai governor, the airport director, and executives at tour operators, will receive the British tourists at the airport.

The UK had banned direct commercial flights to Sharm El-Sheikh in the wake of the downing of a Russian passenger jet in October 2015, which killed all 224 people on board.

In late October, the British government removed the ban, citing improved security procedures at the airport.

Egypt's civil aviation ministry said at the time that starting December and until March two flights would be operated every week to the city to meet rising demand during the winter season.
