Five people killed in building collapse in Alexandria

Ahram Online , Monday 13 Jan 2020

Five people were killed and one person was injured after an old three-storey building collapsed in the central Attarin area in the Egyptian city of Alexandria on Monday.

The victims were sitting at a café on the ground floor of the building when the upper floor collapsed.

According to preliminary reports, a demolition order had previously been issued for the building, but was not implemented. The building was vacant at the time of the collapse except for the café.

The public prosecution has opened a probe into the incident, issuing a summons for the landlord and neighbourhood officials to question them on why the demolition order had not been implemented.
