Egypt's population has officially hit 100 million people, the live population clock of the country's official statistics agency showed on Tuesday.

The Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) live counter showed that the swelling population at home recorded 100 million at 2:30 p.m.

The number excludes Egyptians living abroad, who are estimated at over 13 million people, according to  Egypt's Emigration Minister Nabila Makram. Saudi Arabia houses the lion's share of Egyptian expatriates, with over 2 million people .

Cairo is ranked Egypt's most populated governorate with 9.9 million people, followed by Giza with 9.75 million people then Nile Delta's Sharqia with 7.536 million, CAPMAS data showed.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has repeatedly said that the current rate of population growth poses a threat to the nation and holds back its development plans. Officials describe the the matter as a "catastrophe" that demands immediate attention from the state , just like the country's war against terrorism.

Last year, Egypt launched a two-year initiative dubbed, "Two Is Enough", to lower fertility rates and encourage people, specially those in rural areas, to have fewer children.

The program is mostly locally financed, with the Social Solidarity Ministry spending EGP 75 million Egyptian pounds ($4.7 million) and the UN providing EGP 10 million.
