The Egyptian presidency has mourned with "great sorrow" the death of ousted former President Hosni Mubarak, who died on Tuesday at 91.

The presidency said in a statement that it mourned Mubarak for "what he offered to the country as one of the leaders and heroes of the glorious [1973] war" with Israel.

It referred to his role as "chief of the air forces during a war that restored dignity and pride to the Arab region." The presidency also offered condolences to his family.

Mubarak's son Alaa confirmed the news on Twitter.
