Russian state nuclear energy company Rosatom has discovered a positive coronavirus case among staff at the Cairo branch of its engineering division.

A Rosatom statement said that Director General of Rosatom State Corporation A.E. Likhachev mentioned a number of cases at Rosatom’s foreign construction sites in a video message to employees.

“There is one case of infection of an employee of the Egyptian ASE branch in Cairo,” he said, adding that cases have also been detected at the company’s Belarusian site.

He called the situation “controlled, but requiring utmost attention,” according to the statement. 

Rosatom is constructing Egypt’s first-ever nuclear power plant at Dabaa on the Mediterranean coast, per a 2015 agreement between Cairo and Moscow. 

It will be owned and operated by Egypt’s Nuclear Power Plant Authority (NPPA), and the first reactor is scheduled to go critical in 2026.
