Egypt on Friday reported the highest single-day increase in coronavirus cases and deaths with 1,289 new cases and 34 deaths.

This brings the total number of cases to 22,082 and fatalities to 879, the health ministry said.

The health ministry added that 152 patients had fully recovered and been discharged from isolation hospitals and quarantine facilities. The total number of recoveries from the virus now stands at 5,511.

The number of patients who have re-tested negative for the virus, including complete recoveries, has now reached 6,237, ministry spokesman Khaled Megahed said.

The new cases were detected through the ministry's investigation and contact tracing protocols, he added.

Egypt is planning to gradually re-open some facilities from next week, including sporting clubs and youth centres.

It may re-open worship places gradually while following precautionary measures against the virus, Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly has said.

Starting Saturday, the daily curfew will begin at 8pm instead of the current 5pm, for a period of two weeks.
