Parliament's legislative committee on Sunday approved a move to lift parliamentary immunity from Salafist Nour Party MP Anwar El-Balkimy.
El-Balkimy said he was beaten and robbed of LE100,000 by thugs on 29 February. However, it was later discovered that his facial injuries were caused by cosmetic surgery on his nose.
He attended a closed parliamentary meeting on Saturday to discuss the issue and admitted to the charges against him.
The Nour Party initially defended El-Balkimy and called on the interior ministry to investigate the matter.
However, the manager of a cosmetic surgery clinic revealed that El-Balkimy had undergone nose surgery on 28 February (the day before the alleged attack) and insisted on discharging himself immediately after the operation.
The general prosecutor has issued a report outlining the accusations against El-Balkimy, which include the fabrication of medical reports and filing a false complaint.
The report by parliament's legislative committee is to be presented to MPs for final approval.
