Two Egyptian military planes carrying tons of medical and food aid, prepared in coordination with the Egyptian Red Crescent and a number of civil society groups, left Cairo for Beirut on Wednesday, according to a statement by the armed forces spokesman.

The statement said the move comes as a continuation of the implementation of the directives of President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi to launch an airlift to provide urgent aid and support to Lebanon in the wake of the Beirut port explosion.

An Egyptian field hospital is also operating in Beirut to provide aid to victims of the blast.

According to the statement, Lebanese officials said that the aid “will be delivered to all deserving citizens,” reiterating their gratitude to the Egyptian people and government for the humanitarian support provided.

The deadly explosion in the capital earlier this month killed at least 177 people and injured thousands.

The explosion, the most powerful ever to rip through Beirut, caused property damage worth $10-15 billion disabled the country’s main entry port for imports, required to feed the nation of more than 6 million people.
