Egypt voices support for Afghanistan against terrorism, condemns attacks on civilians

Shoukry expressed hope for a permanent peace that achieves security and stability in Afghanistan, enhances reconstruction efforts and meets the people’s aspirations

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry has voiced Cairo's support for the Afghan government and people in the face of terrorism and extremism, reiterating his condemnation of terrorist attacks against security forces and civilians in the country, a statement by the foreign ministry read.

Shoukry’s remarks came during a video conference on Tuesday with his Afghan counterpart Mohamed Haneef Atmar.

Shoukry expressed hope for a permanent peace that achieves security and stability in Afghanistan, enhances reconstruction efforts and meets the people’s aspirations.

The Egyptian FM affirmed Egypt’s keenness to support Afghanistan’s development efforts in all stages, referring to the historic ties between the two countries.

He also voiced Egypt’s readiness to help in the reconstruction process in Afghanistan and to share its experience in many fields, including the establishment of new cities.

Atmar hailed Egyptian-Afghan relations and the support Egypt has offered, including training Afghan cadres and securing scholarships for Afghan students in the Islamic university of Al-Azhar and other Egypt-based universities.

The Afghan FM called for setting a roadmap for further development of bilateral relations in the political, economic, cultural and security fields.

The Islamic State group and the Taliban have claimed responsibility for many violent attacks in Afghanistan over the past few years, with their victims usually including civilians. 

Egypt has repeatedly condemned terrorist attacks in Afghan cities, especially the capital, Kabul.
