A minor earthquake measuring 3 magnitude on the Richter scale hit east of Cairo on Thursday, said Egypt's National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIA) in a statement.

According to the NRIA, the quake was recorded at 11:33 am local time, 13 km away from the south of the administrative capital.

No injury or property damage were reported, the NRIA said, adding it did not receive information on whether the quake was felt by citizens.

Egypt is typically an earthquake safe country that rarely sees earthquakes, with the latest major earthquake, measuring 5.6 in magnitude, killing 541 people, and injuring over 6,500 in 1992.
