The United Kingdom has pledged £1 million to support the Egyptian government’s response to the coronavirus pandemic, through the World Health Organisation (WHO), Egyptian state’s news agency MENA reported, citing a press release by the UK embassy in Cairo.
British Ambassador to Egypt Geoffrey Adams affirmed his country’s commitment to supporting Egypt through the pandemic.
The British aid will be allocated to help accelerate the Egyptian health ministry’s response to the pandemic, including efforts to prevent infection, the press release said.
The aid will also help the WHO provide the required medical supplies and equipment, including personal protective equipment (PPE), to health staff in Egypt. It will also help provide disinfectants and laboratory equipment.
Through this aid, the WHO is also set to provide online training to the rapid response teams (RRT) in Egyptian governorates. The training will help them obtain essential skills including detecting cases, monitoring them and their contacts, and preventing infection.
This comes few days after Egypt received the first batch of a Chinese coronavirus vaccine, developed by state-owned pharmaceutical giant Sinopharm, at Cairo Airport, coming from the UAE.
The vaccine has 86 percent efficacy against coronavirus, according to the Egyptian health ministry, and doses will be provided free of charge to all Egyptian citizens.
