US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is set to visit Cairo on Saturday in her first official visit to Egypt since Mohamed Morsi was sworn in as Egypt's first freely-elected president, state news agency MENA reported on Tuesday.

MENA quoted anonymous diplomatic officials as saying that Morsi planned to receive Clinton at foreign ministry headquarters on Saturday, where she would also hold talks with her Egyptian counterpart, Mohamed Kamel.

"Clinton is also slated to attend a host of meetings on Sunday to discuss political matters," the sources said, adding that the US state secretary would also head to the coastal city of Alexandria to deliver an address at the Alexandria Library.

Clinton's visit to Egypt comes amid mounting criticism by some quarters of the Muslim Brotherhood, of which Morsi was until recently a leading member, over the group's alleged connections to the US.

Since the 1970s, Egypt has been considered one of Washington's leading allies in the region.
