Strike at Textile Delta company in Tanta continues for second day in growing wave of industrial action that began in Mahalla on Sunday

Workers at the Textile Delta company in Tanta have continued their strike for a second day.

All of the company's 4000 workers agreed to go on strike, according to workers at the company's HQ in Tanta, and are demanding permanent contracts, healthy drinking water, wage increases and better bonuses.

Moreover, workers at the Spinning and Weaving Holding Company in the Nile Delta town of Mahalla have been on strike for five days to demand the removal of the firm's chairman, Fouad Abdel-Alim, and his senior management team, as well as a greater share in the firm's 2011 profits and increases to end of service bonuses.

On Monday and Tuesday, seven other textile factories followed the firm in Mahalla, Egypt's largest textile company, by going on strike.

A strike in Mahalla in 2008 called for the ouster of then president Hosni Mubarak and gained widespread support across the country.

Many activists credit these strikes with having partially set the stage for the January 25 Revolution.
