On Monday, military prosecutors began investigating Sunday night's attack on the Egyptian-Gaza border that left 16 Egyptian border guards dead and seven injured by 35 unknown assailants.

Members of the military prosecution headed to the Al-Arish hospital where the injured are receiving treatment, to listen to their testimony.

Earlier on Monday, the Egyptian armed forces issued an audio statement on state television accusing the assailants of reaching the borders through the Gaza tunnels.

Meanwhile, Israeli news agencies have attributed the attack to militants from an "unknown global jihadist group."

Hamas, which has governed the Gaza Strip since 2007, denied being responsible for the attack and stressed that its security forces are deployed to monitor Gaza-Egypt borders.

Egypt closed the border with Gaza on Sunday after the attack.

The border  is used by thousands of Palestinians to transfer food and goods through its tunnels to overcome humanitarian hardships resulting from an Israeli-imposed embargo on the Gaza Strip.
