Nasserist Hamdeen Sabbahi has vowed, during a press conference for his Popular Egyptian Current on Friday in Damietta, to back President Mohamed Morsi if he proves that he is working for poor, adding that he refuses any form of "Brotherhoodisation" of the state.

Sabbahi, who came third in post-revolution presidential elections, has consistently voiced — along with other liberal and leftist forces — opposition to perceived Islamist hegemony over political life in Egypt.

On Friday, Sabbahi's Popular Current was one of the organisers of a mass protest criticising the ruling Muslim Brotherhood and demanded a constitution representative of all Egyptians.

"We don't want a constitution that gives us the freedom to speak in conferences with our stomachs empty," said Sabbahi during the Damietta event, adding that Egypt is not the "private estate" of anyone but rather is owned by every citizen.

The Nasserist Sabbahi further praised protesters that packed Tahrir Square Friday to demand the removal of the current Constituent Assembly tasked with drafting Egypt's constitution, adding that the current ruling political forces "do not fulfill the ambitions of Egyptians."

"We believe in this unfinished revolution, and we will go on with our struggle until we achieve social justice," he added.
