The April 6 Youth Movement's Democratic Front on Wednesday denounced a recent government decision setting strict closing times for shops and restaurants throughout Egypt.

"The government is issuing its usual poorly thought-out decisions that fail to solve the real problems, simply to save some electricity," the Democratic Front asserted in a Wednesday statement.

By passing the law, the statement added, the government was failing to consider small shop owners who make their living by opening at night after finishing their day jobs.

Under the new law, which will come into effect early next month, Egyptian retailers must shut their doors by 10pm, while restaurants will have to close by midnight.

The notion of enforcing set closing times for businesses was first suggested in August by Petroleum Minister Osama Kamal in hopes of reducing domestic energy consumption.

Other revolutionary movements have also criticised the decision, which will be put into effect on Saturday, 3 November.
