Presidential sources told Ahram Online that President Mohamed Morsi has called on Prime Minister Hisham Qandil to return to Egypt as soon as possible.

Qandil, who was attending the G8 meeting in Davos, is now on his way to Cairo, sources told Ahram Online.

Currently, President Morsi is heading an emergency meeting of the National Defence Council to discuss current developments on the ground that left at least 27 dead in Port Said and Suez.

“The meeting came upon the request of the Ministry of Defence amid the deployment of some of their forces in Suez,” the source told Ahram Online. “It was clear that the situation on the ground was very tense on many governorates and a crisis management plan was needed urgently.”

A press conference is expected after the meeting headed by either the president or someone on his behalf and attended by the ministers of justice and information along with defence, foreign affairs, finance, and the interior. The head of General Intelligence, the Shura Council and leaders of different army factions are expected to also be present.

“It is not officially confirmed yet that President Morsi will cancel his visit to Ethiopia to attend the African Union summit in Addis Ababa, however, either the minister of foreign affairs or the prime minister who will attend the summit," the presidential source told Ahram Online.

Two other emergency meetings are expected to take place in the coming 48 hours and to be headed by the president: first, a Cabinet meeting; second, a Council of Governors meeting.

On another note, diplomatic sources told Ahram Online that the US embassy has contacted both the presidency and leading members of the Muslim Brotherhood and has reported to Washington that the situation in Egypt “is containable.”
