Egypt's Administrative Court ruled Wednesday against the extradition of Ahmed Gadhaf Al-Dam, a close aide and cousin of former Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi.

The case was brought by Al-Dam after the Libyan administration demanded he be extradited to Libya for alleged crimes under Gaddafi’s rule.

In his suit, Al-Dam requested political asylum in Egypt, including being issued an official document recognising what he says is his Egyptian nationality.

Late in March, Al-Dam's lawyer made claims that he is originally Egyptian as he was born to Egyptian parents.

A similar case was brought by another Gaddafi-era official, Mohamed Ibrahim, brother of former Libyan Information Minister Moussa Ibrahim.

The plaintiffs argued that the repatriation would put their lives at risk and thus would be illegal according to international principles pertaining to refugees and targets of extradition.

Last month, three former Libyan officials connected with the Gaddafi regime were arrested in Cairo, inclusive of Al-Dam, Ibrahim and Ali Maria, former Libyan ambassador to Egypt.
