Egypt's state security prosecution has ordered Gamal and Alaa Mubarak, the sons of former president Hosni Mubarak, to be detained for a further 15 days on corruption charges.
On 7 April, Hosni Mubarak received an extension to his detention by 15 days pending further investigations into the same charges of illicitly obtaining funds earmarked for the appropriation of presidential palaces.
On Monday, a court ruled the ex-president could no longer be detained over his complicity in the killing of protesters during the revolution. Nevertheless, he will remain in detention on the corruption charges.
Mubarak's lawyer successfully argued that his client had already spent the maximum period under provisional detention – two years – in the killing of protesters case.
Last June, Mubarak was given a life sentence for failing to prevent the deaths of hundreds of unarmed anti-regime protesters during the 18-day uprising that ended his decades-long rule. In January, a retrial was ordered because of procedural failings at the original trial.
Because Egyptian law prohibits overlapping terms of detention, Mubarak's new 15-day detention order began on Monday, coinciding with his release on charges of complicity in the killing of protesters, explained Appeal Court deputy head Yehia Galal.
The ex-president was assessed by a medical committee on Tuesday to see if he can be transferred from Maadi Military Hospital back to Tora Prison Hospital, general prosecution spokesperson Judge Mahmoud El-Hefnawy told Ahram Online.
The doctors are expected to issue a report on the matter to the general prosecution.
