Authorities at Ain Shams University on Wednesday suspended all classes and educational activities at the university for an indefinite amount of time, reported Ahram’s Arabic website.

“The president of the university decided to suspend educational activites…until the relevant authorities secure the gates and university’s fences,” read the university’s statement.

Clashes broke out between students and thugs on the campus in Cairo on Sunday following a march held by students to the university headquarters in the afternoon.

Hundreds of university students staged the march that they dubbed "No to thugs" from Al-Nour Mosque in the Abbasiya district to the nearby campus.

Students are lobbying for tighter on-campus security as well as an end to thuggery, after having been attacked by unknown assailants several times.

The assailants obstructed the student march, pelting it with rocks and glass.

According to the university’s statement, the decision came to protect the students and university employees.
