Trial proceedings in the case against Egyptian political activist Ahmed Douma and 12 other activists will begin on 6 July at a South Cairo criminal court.

Along with Douma, trial defendants will also include blogger Alaa Abdel-Fattah, journalist Nawara Negm, opposition National Salvation Front member Hazem Abdel-Azim, Constitution Party member Ahmed Eid and political activist Karim El-Shaer.

The date for the opening trial session was set by Samir Abul-Maati, head of the Cairo Appeal Court, on Monday.

The defendants stand accused of inciting violence in March, when anti-government protesters attempted to storm the headquarters of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood – the group from which President Mohamed Morsi hails and which holds a parliamentary majority – in Cairo's Moqattam district.

Douma, a member of Egypt's opposition Popular Current movement, is the only one of the defendants currently in detention. He stands accused of insulting President Morsi, who he described as a "killer" in televised statements.
