Rival protests by supporters and opponents of Egypt's toppled Islamist leader Mohamed Morsi on Friday left three dead and 34 injured across five Egyptian towns, medical sources told Al-Ahram Arabic news website.

Clashes between Morsi supporters and unknown assailants in the Nile Delta city of Mansoura left three women dead and eight wounded, the source added.

The women were reportedly attacked by birdshot and knives during a pro-Morsi march in the city.

Four others were injured in scuffles between rival factions in Qena, Upper Egypt .

The 19 other injures occured at rallies in Cairo, Giza and Gharbiya, mostly as a result of fainting and sunstroke.

Tension and political division has been mounting in Egypt since the army's ouster of democratically elected president Mohamed Morsi on 3 July following mass street protest calling for an end to his rule.

Rival demonstrations were staged in several Egyptian cities Friday, with tens of thousands of Morsi's Islamist backers rallying in Cairo to demand his reinstatement.

Anti-Morsi protesters also turned out in thousands in Tahrir Square to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the 1973 Arab-Israeli War victory (which falls on the 10th of Ramadan, according to the Islamic calendar) and push ahead with the goals of the revolution.
