The victim was caught in the crossfire when armed men in a car attacked a security checkpoint

An Egyptian citizen was killed Monday night after getting caught in the crossfire between security forces and unknown assailants in Sinai.

Gunmen in a car attacked Al-Kharouba checkpoint on the road between the cities of Al-Arish and Rafah in Sinai.

Thirty-year-old Raed Salama received a gunshot to the chest while passing by the checkpoint at the time of the attack, a security source told Ahram Arabic news website.

Armed assailants attacked three different checkpoints in the border peninsula on Monday, injuring two Egyptian soldiers.

Egyptian military forces are carrying out security operations in Sinai to confront the repeated attacks on security forces in the peninsula. The attacks have increased in frequency since the popularly-backed ouster of president Mohamed Morsi by the armed forces on 3 July.
