Security forces cleared out the main Cairo sit-in of supporters of deposed president Mohamed Morsi near Rabaa Al-Adawyia Mosque Wednesday afternoon.
At least eight Muslim Brotherhood leaders were reportedly arrested during the dispersal operation.
While no official statement has been issued on the identity of the detained leaders, Al-Ahram Arabic news website says Muslim Brotherhood leaders Mohamed El-Beltagy, Essam El-Erian and Islamic preacher Safwat Hegazy were among the detained.
Several protesters were arrested for illegal posession of arms.
The dispersal operation, which started at 6am, also succeeded in ending the pro-Morsi sit-in at Al-Nahda Square in Giza.
According to the Ministry of Health, at least 149 has been killed and 1403 injured in violence across the country.
