Gamal Akbi, treasurer of the state-backed Egyptian Federation for Trade Unions (EFTU), said on Thursday that Egypt's workers will back former military chief Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi in his presidential run.

El-Sisi resigned from his post of chief of armed forces and defence minister on Wednesday in preparation to run in the country's upcoming presidential elections.

Akbi said that Egyptian workers will line up to support El-Sisi, whom he likened to former Egyptian president Gamal Abdel-Nasser.

Al-Ahram's Arabic news website quoted Akbi as saying that he hopes El-Sisi will support workers as Nasser did during his rule in the 1950s and 1960s.

After the 25 January revolution, dozens of independent unions were established by workers in efforts to escape state control.

El-Sisi is expected to win the upcoming elections by a landslide, mainly due to his popularity after ousting former president Mohamed Morsi following mass protests against his rule.
