German Chancellor Angela Merkel congratulated Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi on his re-election for a second four-year term in a letter on Wednesday, affirming her country’s commitment to supporting Egypt, according to Egypt's state-owned MENA news agency.

Merkel expressed Germany's complete support for Egypt's development and stability, adding that President El-Sisi had overcome many challenges in his first term, including fighting terrorism and implementing the IMF-linked economic reform programme.

In a letter, the German Chancellor also wished El-Sisi good luck in his second presidential term.

The Egyptian president and the German chancellor have met several times over the past few years, with the last meeting taking place last June in Berlin on the sidelines of the G20 Africa summit. 

Merkel visited Egypt in March 2017 for the first time in 10 years to inaugurate a mega-project led by Siemens manufacturing company to upgrade Egypt's electric power capacities.
