A source in the North Sinai police directorate said Sunday that the head of the explosives department has been injured while attempting a controlled detonation of an explosive device in Sheikh Zuweid City, reported Al-Ahram Arabic news website.

The source said officer Essam Younis was hit by shrapnel after the bomb detonated during the treatment. Younis was transferred to a hospital for treatment.

Sinai has witnessed increasing attacks on security forces including shootings and bombings since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in the summer of 2013, leaving hundreds killed or injured.

Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis, an Al-Qaeda affiliated group, claimed most of the operations against security forces.
