Several hundred congregated Friday in front of the monument to the Unknown Soldier to express gratitude to the Egyptian army for its role in the January 25 Revolution.
Egypt’s interim Prime Minister Essam Sharaf was the most prominent figure in the rally, which took place following Friday prayers. He did not stay for long but some of the participants chanted his name.
“The people and the army are one hand,” and “The people want to thank the armed forces” were among other slogans that were echoed by participants. Pro-military banners and placards were abundant.
The “Friday of gratitude” had been called for by a number of political coalitions.
The Egyptian military forces were highly acclaimed for their role during the 18-day uprising.
Aside from showing restraint and declaring that they would not fire on protesters, the army is believed to have intervened to ensure the overthrow of former president Hosni Mubarak, who has been remanded in police custody for questioning on charges of corruption and in connection with the killing of peaceful protesters.
