Officer was killed by unknown assailants near his house in Al-Arish

A police officer was shot dead by unknown gunmen on Friday afternoon near his house in North Sinai's Al-Arish, according to a statement issued by the interior ministry.

The officer was identified as El-Sayed Ibrahim in the statement. The assailants reportedly stole his car after shooting him.

Militant attacks targeting police and military have been commonplace since the army's ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi last summer amid mass protests against his year-long rule.

More than 500 people, mostly policemen and soldiers, have been killed in militant attacks, including bombings and shootings.

Militants say their attacks are revenge against a crackdown waged by authorities against Morsi's Islamist supporters that has killed hundreds and jailed thousands of others.
