The Egyptian army's chief of staff, Lieutenant General Mahmoud Hegazi, met with a British military official on Monday for talks on regional concerns.

Defence Lieutenant General Simon Mayall, UK Middle East Advisor at the defence ministry, is currently visiting Egypt to discuss military cooperation between the two countries amid swift developments in the region.

On Thursday, Egypt – along with nine Arab states – agreed to join Washington in the fight against Islamic State jihadists in an effort to build an international coalition.

Participation will include joining any coordinated military campaigns as appropriate.

Mayall told Egyptian military officials that the UK is ready to support Egypt and other regional states in the fight against any groups that threaten their security, according to Al-Ahram's Arabic news website.
