The head of the Free Egyptians Party, Ahmed Saeed, has resigned for unspecified personal and professional reasons, the party said in a statement on Friday.
The liberal party's board of trustees delegated Osama El-Ghazaly Harb to act as a charge d'affaires until a new party head is elected, the statement read.
A new head should be elected within three months of the former leader’s resignation, the party's bylaws dictate.
The bylaws also stipulate that if the leader resigns, the secretary-general becomes the charge d'affaires. However, the current secretary-general, Essam Khalil, is preoccupied with preparations for the party's bid for the upcoming parliamentary elections.
The party expressed their respect for the private reasons that prevented Saeed, who's also the vice president of Egypt's most popular club Ahly, from heading the Free Egyptians Party.
They added that they have nominated him to join the party's board of trustees.
The liberal party, which was founded after the 2011 uprising by business tycoon Naguib Sawiris and has been a key political party ever since, is scheduled to run for Egypt's parliamentary elections, slated to take place before the end of this year.
