Prominent Egyptian musician and composer Hani Mehanna has to serve a five years in jail over fraud charges, Egypt's public prosecutor's office said in a statement on Wednesday.

Mehanna was convicted of illegally acquiring public funds in a dispute with Egypt's Bank of Alexandria.

The bank had signed a deal with Mehanna to rent a venue owned by him in order to start a new branch and paid him an advance.

However, the committee the bank formed to examine the suitability of the venue to serve as a commercial outlet, deemed it not suitable.

The bank then asked Mehanna to cancel the deal and asked him to repay the advance. Mehanna reportedly declined to reimburse the bank forcing it to take the issue to court.

Mehanna, who is also head of the arts syndicate unions, was convicted of illegaly receiving over LE3 million from the bank.

A senior bank official who was in charge of the deal also received a 10-year sentence in the same case.
