Egypt is currently working on cutting expenditures on diplomatic representation abroad, President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi said on Tuesday.
In a presidential statement El-Sisi said that the move aims not to affect consulate services for Egyptian expats abroad. However, he did not provide details on what the downsizing plan include.
The president, who is facing significant financial challenges, made his comments in a meeting with young expats organised by the youth and sports ministry and manpower and immigration ministry.
He added that his government is also working on listing the specialisations of Egyptians abroad in an attempt to maximise benefit from their expertise.
Egypt has 162 embassies and consulates around the world, according to the foreign ministry's official website. It also has 531 people working in its offices abroad.
