The sergeant handed himself in, saying the victim had attacked his brother over a land issue

A police sergeant shot dead a civilian on Monday, after a scuffle broke out between the victim and the sergeant's brother in the Nile Delta city of Menoufiya, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.

The 20-year-old victim, a government employee, had reportedly shot the sergeant's brother, his neighbour, with birdshot as they fought over a land disagreement.

The sergeant handed himself in, confessing that he had shot the victim because he saw his brother being attacked. The victim died on the scene.

On Sunday, another low-ranking police officer was detained for allegedly killing a hospitalised terror suspect after he was "provoked" in a Cairo hospital.

The officer, who was on guard duty, shot the injured man because he had "insulted [him], his family, the police force and the armed forces", according to the interior ministry.
