Three policemen were killed on Saturday in an exchange of fire with suspected criminals in the southern city of Minya, the interior ministry said.
The policemen were conducting a security raid targeting apparent hideouts of wanted criminals, when the assailants shot them and fled the scene. Two other policemen were injured and transferred to hospital, a statement on the ministry's Facebook page said.
Egypt’s security forces have been stretched in recent months, confronting a growing wave of militant attacks that have targeted the security forces.
