Two people have been injured and shop fronts smashed when several improvised bombs went off in a southern Cairo suburb, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.

Five consecutive minor explosions hit near a KFC restaurant, a school and a bank in Helwan district early Sunday.

Two people were injured in the bombings and the windows of at least five shops were shattered in the blasts.

Explosives experts have been combing the area.

Bombings and shootings have been commonplace in Egypt since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013 unleashed a surge in Islamist militancy.

Helwan is a stronghold for the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamists. Supporters of the ousted president have frequently clashed with police since his ouster.
