A small bomb has exploded near Carrefour hypermarket in the El-Seyouf area of Alexandria, Ahram Arabic news website reported.

Health Ministry spokesman Hossam Abdel-Ghaffar told Ahram Online that one person was killed and five injured in the blast on Sunday morning.

The deceased victim was transferred to Kom El-Dekka morgue while the injured were transferred to hospital.

Abdel-Ghaffar added that earlier on Sunday four people were injured in a separate blast near Alexandria's Meharam Bey police station.

Another bomb exploded near Bab Sharq police station in the Mediterranean city, but no injuries were reported.

Egypt has been facing a decade-long Islamist insurgency in the Sinai Peninsula, which spiked after the ouster of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013.

Militants have repeatedly attacked police and army sites and personnel in Sinai as well as other parts of the country, leaving hundreds dead and injured.

In recent months, militants have increasingly attacked economic targets in urban areas, such as electricity pylons and mobile-network stores.

Civilians have often fallen victim during various violent attacks.
