The Egyptian newspaper Al-Watan changed the content of its print issues on Wednesday after it was confiscated due to an investigative report it was planning to run suggesting that some state institutions are implicated in tax evasion, sources inside the newspaper told Ahram Online.

According to the sources, the first edition of Al-Watan newspaper was confiscated while it was being printed at Ahram Print Press over an investigative report claiming that the Egyptian presidency, the ministry of interior, the ministry of defence and intelligence agencies aren't paying taxes.

The sources added that a second edition of the newspaper was printed and was available on newsstands after the investigative report was removed from the issue and was replaced by a report about this week's economic conference in Sharm El-Sheikh.  

It is unclear who stands behind the decision to confiscate the newspaper, the sources added.

Scans of Al-Watan newspaper’s original front page on Wednesday went viral on social media showing headlines about the investigative report.

The newspaper's claims about tax evasion were supported by documents, it said.
