A policeman was shot dead by unidentified assailants on Friday in Fayoum governorate in Upper Egypt, Al-Ahram’s Arabic news website reported.

The low-ranking policeman, 30, who was not named, was attacked on the Cairo-Fayoum highway by three gunmen on motorcycles, Al-Ahram reported, and died shortly after.

Hundreds of police and army personnel have been killed in targeted bombings, drive-by shootings and other attacks orchestrated by militant groups since August 2013, when anti-state violence spiked following the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi.
