An army conscript, aged 21, was shot dead by unidentified assailants at a checkpoint in North Sinai's Rafah on Monday, the Ahram's Arabic news website has reported.

Egypt's army has been fighting an Islamist militant insurgency that has spiked since the ouster of democratically-elected Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013.

Militants have killed hundreds of police and army officers, mainly in North Sinai, while Egypt's army has announced that it has killed hundreds of militants in security operations.

On Sunday, six people, including at least one civilian, were killed when a bomb-laden vehicle exploded near the Third Police Station in North Sinai's Al-Arish.

Militant attacks against security forces in more populated area, including Cairo and the Nile Delta, have led to civilians casualities.
