Two children died on Wednesday as an unidentified shell hit Egypt's North Sinai city of Sheikh Zuweid, health ministry undersecretary for North Sinai Tarek Khater told Ahram Online.

He could not confirm neither the age nor the sex of both children, adding no other injuries or deaths have been reported.

In another attack earlier on Monday, a police officer and two conscripts were killed in Rafah.

Egypt's army has been fighting a decade-long militant Islamist insurgency that has spiked since the ouster of president Mohamed Morsi in summer 2013.
